Avenue of Stars

Over the last few decades, Hong Kong's film industry has been on the rise, attracting increasing attention from the Western audience and is currently the third largest, following Hollywood and Bollywood. Honouring this progress, a HK$40 million project was established and the result was the Avenue of Stars (星光大道) in Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, which was inspired by the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The project was supported by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Hong Kong Tourism Commission, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Hong Kong Film Awards Association. The 440 meter avenue officially opened on 27th April 2004 and became available to public a day later.

The Avenue of Stars unveils 100 years of Hong Kong cinematic history by using a plethora of statues, inscriptions, handprints and autographs of famous Hong Kong film stars. At opening, the avenue honoured an initial 73 celebrities from past and present including Bruce Lee, Michelle Yeoh Choo Kheng, Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li and Maggie Cheung. Inductees are elected by vote by the Hong Kong Film Awards Association with one of the key success ingredients being the fact they brought international recognition to the local Hong Kong cinema.

Yet another reason for visiting the Avenue of Stars is the magnificent panoramic views across Victoria Harbour. It is perfect for an evening walk or just for relaxing, having an ice cream and watching ships sailing across the harbour. During night time, the Avenue of Stars is also one of the best places in Hong Kong to witness the world-famous Symphony of Lights display. The spectacle runs every night at 8pm Hong Kong time, subject to good weather conditions. What follows next is a 20 minute dazzling laser light presentation with a special display on Saturday nights featuring pyrotechnics and fireworks.

Avenue of Stars is located in the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, district of Kowloon. There are plenty of options for transportation including the Kowloon Motor Bus, Citybus, MTR and Star Ferry. More details regarding the routes can be found at the official Avenue of Stars website.
