At a higher fare taxis are best suited for short distances. Unsurprisingly the average fare is higher throughout Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and lower in rural areas of the New Territories and Lantau Island. There are three types: Red Taxis, particularly dominant in central areas; Green Taxis, common in parts of the New Territories and Blue Taxis, on Lantau Island. Octopus cards are not accepted and it is advisable to ask for a receipt.
