Theatre epic to be staged

The Movie & TV Theatrical Society will stage large-scale theatre epic Tearless Honour at Yuen Long Theatre in March.

 

Directed by Lester Chan, the production tells the story of a family migrating from Guangzhou to Hong Kong during the Sino-Japanese War and World War II, a period that changed forever the relationship between the Mainland and Hong Kong, and dictated the development of post-war Hong Kong society.

 

The cast includes renowned artists Shek Sau, May Tse, Lily Poon, and Anderson Junior.

 

The production explores a picturesque marriage of Chinese art and Chinese music of the 1930s and '40s along with video art.

 

It will be staged at 7.45pm on March 10 and 2.45pm on March 10 and 11.

Mothers & Sons to premiere in March

The Young Academy Cantonese Opera Troupe will perform Mothers & Sons in March as part of the Young Cantonese Opera Artists Series.

 

It will star Wang Zhiliang, Huang Hanqin, Yam Dan-fung, Tsz Ling-chau, Lin Yingshi and Chan Kei-ting.

 

The opera will be staged at 7.30pm on March 9 at Sheung Wan Civic Centre and on March 24 at Tai Po Civic Centre.

HK retrospective opens

The Film Archive has launched its latest exhibition - The Wheel of Time: 100 Years of Light & Shadow.

 

Running until March 4, it employs film images to recount the development of Hong Kong cinema along with the significant social changes the city underwent from 1898 to 2010.

 

Featuring a time tunnel installation, the exhibition consists of six areas spanning different periods in the city's history, showing the sights and sounds of its geography, politics, social life and culture.

 

The free exhibition is open from 10am to 8pm daily, except Thursdays when the archive is closed. Call 2739 2139 for enquiries.

China Philharmonic (HK) to perform

The China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) will perform several Western and Chinese musical works with music director and conductor Lim Kek-han and soprano Sandy Lau in February.

 

The programme will consist of four Western classics: Rossini's Overture: La Gazza Ladra; Bizet's Suite L'Arlesienne; Beethoven's Symphony No.5; and, Strauss' The Blue Danube, plus Chinese songs: Liu Chi's My Motherland; Yang Ming, Jiang Chunyang and Jin Sha's In Praise of the Red Blossoms; and, Wang Xiren and Hu Shiping's Ode to Corals.

 

The shows will be held at 8pm on February 26 at Yuen Long Theatre.

Shows to celebrate City Hall

Three concerts will be held in March to celebrate City Hall's 50th anniversary and pay tribute to 20th Century composers and arrangers of instrumental and vocal works in Cantonese music.

 

Musical scores have been retrieved from the archives and rearranged for vocal performance by well known contemporary Cantonese opera artists. There will also be instrumental pieces to give a more comprehensive view of the genre over the past 100 years.

 

Performers include Wan Fei-yin, Ng Chin-fung, Yuen Siu-fai, Ng Mei-ying, Lee Lung, Nam Fung, Chan Wing-yee, Sun Kim-long, Koi Ming-fai, Lung Koon-tin and Chung Lai-yung.

 

The vocal works include Why Have You Not Returned, Romance of the Lovers? Mirror, and Romance of the Phoenix Tower.

 

The instrumental works include Joyous Celebrations, In Celebration of Good Times, and The Toll of the Temple Bell.

 

The shows will be held at 7.30pm on March 8 at City Hall, and March 12 and 13 at the Cultural Centre.
